The After Show

In the latest episode of The After Show, hosts dive into Shawn Kanungo's thought-provoking session at CALEP

Leaders,
Are you ready?

This text captures a keynote presentation by Shawn Kanungo, who discusses the transformative power of artificial intelligence and the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He argues that modern software is shifting towards an agentic future, where autonomous systems will execute complex workflows, effectively making traditional user interfaces obsolete. Kanungo encourages business leaders to disrupt their own processes by rebuilding organisations from the ground up using these advanced tools to find new efficiencies. Beyond technical shifts, he emphasises that human connection and "friction" will become vital competitive advantages in an increasingly automated world. Ultimately, the speaker challenges his audience to move past conventional wisdom and embrace a "rookie" mindset to navigate the significant changes ahead.

Briefing: Innovation, AI, and the Agentic Era

The following document synthesizes key insights from a keynote address by innovation strategist Shawn Kanungo regarding the current state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its transformative impact on the energy industry. The core thesis posits that society has transitioned from the era of "generative" AI into the "Agentic" and "Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI) eras, where technology is capable of reasoning, using complex software, and executing tasks autonomously.

The analysis highlights a fundamental shift in the value of human labor: as AI commoditizes knowledge and execution, the premium shifts to judgment, mastery, and "friction"—the high-value, human-centric interactions that build trust and relationships. For the energy sector specifically, the document outlines strategies for addressing the loss of institutional knowledge due to retirement and reimagining recruitment through the lens of "status" rather than traditional job descriptions.

The Evolution of AI: From Polishing Emails to AGI

The trajectory of AI development has moved rapidly through three distinct phases. While initial public interaction focused on superficial tasks, the technology has reached a point of cognitive parity with human professionals in many fields.

Three Eras of AI Integration

Era

Timeline

Primary Utility

Example Actions

Generative Era

2022 – 2024

Content Polishing

Improving emails, Tinder bios, creating memes.

Agentic Era

2024 – 2025

Task Execution

Software that can "reason" and actively get things done.

AGI Era

2025+

Supervision & Management

AI that performs almost any cognitive human task; humans move to supervisor roles.

The Breakthrough of "Computer Use"

The most significant recent development is Computer Use, where AI agents utilize software (e.g., 3D modeling tools like Blender or Unreal Engine) better than human operators. This allows non-experts to turn a simple prompt into a full-scale production application.

  • Recursive Loops: Modern models can identify their own security vulnerabilities or code deficiencies and patch them autonomously, improving every hour.

  • Prompt-to-Production: Examples include generating a Netflix-style employee onboarding platform for Imperial Oil or a global recruitment and ranking system for Shell within minutes.

Redefining Human Value: The Power of Judgment

Historically, "knowledge" and "execution" were considered the primary sources of professional power. In the AGI era, these are now commoditized.

  1. The Shift to Judgment: When execution becomes easy and nearly free, the value lies in deciding what to do. Power resides in those who can ask the right questions rather than those who provide the standard answers.

  2. Conventional Wisdom vs. Dangerous Ideas: AI is the ultimate engine for conventional wisdom because it is trained on the past. True innovation requires "dangerous ideas"—concepts that look "dumb" until they become the new standard (e.g., the introduction of credit cards or the invention of flight).

  3. Awakening Greatness Inside (AGI): The speaker redefines AGI as a tool to unlock unique human strengths. AI serves as an amplifier, allowing professionals to delegate "drudgery" (email, data entry) and focus on their unique gifts.

Friction vs. Frictionless: The Strategy of "AI and Al"

As organizations seek to optimize processes, they must choose between two winning paths. The "middle" is described as a "black hole of mediocrity."

The Two Winning Models

  • Frictionless (AI): Systems that are fast, on-demand, and seamless. Examples include Amazon, McDonald's, and automated data reconciliation.

  • Friction (Human): Intentional slowing down to create meaningful, magical, and memorable experiences. This is built on trust, relationships, and "holding a stakeholder’s hand" through complex processes.

The Concierge Level: "AI and Al"

The document references a doorman named Muhammad (or "Al") at a luxury hotel to illustrate the "concierge level" of value. While technology provides the "alarm clock" (reliable, frictionless), the human provides the "gentle knock on the door" (care and relationship). For the energy industry, which is built on stakeholder relationships and land management, the "friction" of human connection is the hardest element to replace.

Strategic Challenges in the Energy Industry

The energy sector faces a critical "institutional knowledge" gap as masters of craft in engineering and design retire.

The Crisis of Mastery

AI can summarize manuals, but it cannot produce "Masters." Mastery requires decades of "tacit experience" and intuition that is not documented on the internet.

  • The Problem: The "freedoms of light, travel, and heat" are at stake if retiring masters cannot be replaced.

  • The Solution: Organizations must find ways to get young people to embrace the industry, not through traditional recruitment, but by showing how the field improves their Status.

Recruitment via Status

Status is defined as being "valued and respected by others." To attract the next generation (who currently seek status as YouTubers or streamers), the energy industry must highlight:

  • Ownership and Freedom: Promoting the ability to own land and operate with independence.

  • Technology Leadership: Positioning the industry as increasingly technology-enabled and "scary good."

Implementation: The "Gym" Mindset

To successfully integrate AI, organizations should avoid one-time training sessions and instead adopt a "gym" philosophy.

  • Work Scared Until You Become Scary: Professionals are encouraged to immerse themselves in the technology until it becomes a "muscle." Those who are "scary good" combine deep craft knowledge with the ability to leverage AI tools.

  • Building a "V2": Organizations should not simply "bolt on" AI to existing processes. They must reimagine their entire operation from zero, identifying what can be eliminated, what can be automated, and what requires more humanity.

  • Risk and Governance: Innovation in AI must be matched by innovation in risk management. Security teams should move from saying "no" to creating "sandboxes" where new tools can be tested safely.

Critical Quotes

"Strategy without energy is just called a PowerPoint deck."

"The easier it becomes to do anything, the more it matters what you choose to do."

"AI is not going to take jobs. What it's going to do is allow everybody to do any job."

"Dangerous ideas always look dumb until we look dumb."

"The most dangerous person in the room is a person who is most afraid, yet bold enough to move forward."
